Trezor Model T Review

If you’re conducting research about hardware wallets, you must already be aware of what they are – the most secure way to hold your cryptocurrency coins. But when we talk about hardware or cold wallets, there are very few good options that come from reputable brands.

And one of them is TREZOR. The first model the company came up with was called TREZOR One which has been one of the most popular hardware wallets. TREZOR Model T is the second generation wallet with even better feature set but also comes at a much higher price. So, is it worth paying those extra dollars? Let’s find out.

Introduction to TREZOR Model T

TREZOR Model T is made by SatoshiLabs and it has a similar footprint of its predecessor – TREZOR One. However, the biggest difference you notice is the color touchscreen and no physical buttons to operate the device. According to SatoshiLabs, the firmware, called TREZOR Core, for this model has been written from scratch to reinforce security even further. The package includes the hardware wallet, seed phrase cards, some stickers, and a USB cable.

The device itself is light and boasts robust built quality making it easily pocketable. A new addition to this package is a magnetic dock which can be placed on a wall or under the desk to keep your wallet in. It also comes with a seal on its USB port so you would know if the device has been compromised. It also has a slot for microSD card.

Setting Up TREZOR Model T

Setting up the device is pretty straightforward as all you have to do is download TREZOR Bridge and update the device to the latest firmware. Unlike TREZOR One, here you have an option to skip the part where you’re required to note down the seed phrase which is fundamentally a password for accessing your bitcoins or other cryptocurrency.

You’re prompted to note down the seed phrase but it’s not compulsory. However, we recommend that you don’t skip it unless you need to use the device in some kind of urgency. In that case, you can do it afterwards.

Using TREZOR Model T

Operating the device is now more intuitive as you’ve got a touchscreen but if you have big hands you might face some trouble as the screen is too small. The upside to the touchscreen is that there are many processes which you can directly accomplish on the device without having to use a computer. For instance, choosing your PIN number or recovering your wallet.

Just like the other model, TREZOR keypad gets jumbled regularly to thwart hacking attempts. This way hackers and cyber criminals can’t identify the keystrokes.

TREZOR Model T Security

TREZOR Model T keeps your digital assets secure against both physical and virtual theft attempts. It uses seed phrase protection which is generated using RNG and you can use the phrase to back up your TREZOR Model T wallet. Seed is only visible on the wallet which isn’t online.

PIN is also protected against wrong guesses. For each wrong guess, the wait duration shoots up by a power of 2 which means a person will have to wait for 17 years for making 30 wrong guesses. You can also include a passphrase for your seed phrase to add another cushion of security. The device protects you against brute force and phishing attacks as well.

Supported Cryptocurrencies

TREZOR Model T offers great compatibility with support for over 1,000 coins as well as ERC-20 tokens. Some of the popular supported coins include Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Zcash (ZCH), Stellar (XLM), and Dash (DASH). It also supports Ripple (XRP) which is missing from TREZOR One.

Final Word

TREZOR Model T is available for $165 on different ecommerce stores including the official one. At that price, it offers greater compatibility as compared to T-One, better build quality, more flexibility and touchscreen controls along with a dock. If you’re a beginner then TREZOR One is a great choice for you but if you are a crypto enthusiast who wants the latest and the greatest, then model T has everything you want.
